How to Export Data From Keyword Research Tools
March 22nd, 2009KeywordIntent currently supports keyword research data from popular tools Google Keyword Tool, KeywordDiscovery.com and keywords from your own website analytics application such as Google Analytics. Over time, KeywordIntent will support other tools and extend functionality of existing tools as requested by our users.
This “how to” guide shows you how to export research data from these tools to ensure that all your keywords are added to KeywordIntent as smoothly as possible and without breakages along the way.
Data Displayed In a KeywordIntent Keyword Strategy Document:
KeywordIntent currently does not display all data available from the keyword research tools throughout the beta period.
The default Keyword Strategy displays data for:
- Term – keywords and phrases from all research data files are displayed
- Average Searches Per Month – the average searches over a 12 month period as reported by Google Keyword Tool is displayed
- KEI – a competitiveness score provided by KeywordDiscovery. The higher the score, the lower the competition for that term.
- Predicted Daily – the estimated number of searches across all major search engines for the keyword term within the next 24 hours as reported by KeywordDiscovery.
- Occurrences – the number of pages the term has appeared on as reported by KeywordDiscovery.
Exporting Keyword Data From Google Keyword Tool:
Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool is available at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. With the Google Keyword Tool you are able to search for related keywords to advertise on through Google AdWords and also use those same words on your website to be found naturally through search engines.

- Simply select the region or several regions based on your target market
- Enter in a keyword or phrase and type the letters displayed in the image into the captcha field. Click “Get keyword ideas”.
- Data for related keywords, advertiser competition, Approx. Search Volume for the previous month, Approx. Avg Search Volume are displayed.
- Choose either if you wish to display average search volumes for Broad Match, Phrase Match or Exact Match. Google defines these as:
- Broad match: keyword (no punctuation)
Allows your ad to show for searches on similar phrases and relevant variations. E.g. the term “tennis shoes” can also be found in “buy tennis shoes”, “tennis shoe photos”, “running shoes” and “tennis sneakers”.
- Phrase match: “keyword”
Allows your ad to show for searches that match the exact phrase. E.g. the term “tennis shoes” can also be found in “red tennis shoes”, “buy tennis shoes” and “tennis shoes photo”, but not “shoes for tennis”, “tennis shoe” or “tennis sneakers”.
- Exact match: [keyword]
Allows your ad to show for searches that match the exact phrase exclusively. E.g. “tennis shoes” will only be found for “tennis shoes”, not “red tennis shoes”, “tennis shoe” or “buy tennis shoes”.
For the purposes of creating a Keyword Strategy for organic search, it is best to use either phrase match or exact match. This will give you a better sense of the number of real searches being conducted within Google on a monthly basis for the terms you are targeting.
- At this point you do not need to start selecting the keywords for your strategy. Simply go to the bottom of the keyword lists to “Download all keywords”. Three options are presented including text, .csv (for excel) and .csv. You only need to click on the .csv option to save this file to your hard drive.
- Upload the .csv file to KeywordIntent by clicking on the Upload Keyword Research button in the Toolbox or on the dashboard of your Keyword Strategy project.
- Browse for the file on your hard drive and select it.
- Select Research Source as being Google Traffic Estimator.
- Type in the name of your research so you can refer back to it in the Keyword Sorting area.
